Methodist Free Church Mission, 'Wenchow, China, April, 1901. The year 1900 will remain throughout all history as The Black Year of Christian missions in China. Within a few brief weeks one hundred and thirty-four godly men and gentle women of the Protestant faith, with their fifty- two children, and many Roman Catholic priests and nuns, were callously murdered with circumstances of harrowing cruelty. It is not my purpose here to enter into detail of their sufferings; that would be heart-rending. One instance only will I give. Ic is the account of a native Christian, an eye-witness of one of these martyrdoms. I, Yung Cheng, am a member of the Baptist Church, and was baptised by Pastor Farthing eighteen months ago. For some time previous to the massacre I had been living on the Baptist Mission Societys premises at T£ai-yueu-fu, having a sickness which was being treated, and spending my time in study of the Scriptures. When Dr. Edwards hospital was burnt down I returned to nay home (June 28th). I returned
