- New chapels built at Tamarua and Iviraa. Natives' social habits improved. Good results of system of visiting the natives' homes. Native youths now leaving for California as formerly for Tahiti. Whalers call there to pick up native crews. Spirit of indifference in Church. Encouraging signs also given. Many offering to be trained as teachers to the heathen. Native efforts and contributions despite discouragement caused by lack of ready market for their produce. Additions to Church. Differences among chiefs augmented by foreigners, especially Frenchmen from Tahiti, to secure residence there. Injustice and partiality of their laws.
