INDIA: A PLAN
By SIR ALFRED WATSON
AT last there is a general sense that
** something more must be done to
clear the political situation in India. All
the newspapers have become aware that
here is an urgent question. The Daily
Mail, which under the first Lord Rother-
mere was the most uncompromising and
blind of opponents of the Act of 1935,
now jumps into the arena with a demand
for radical action...”

IRAQ CURRENCY INCREASE
Book Review
There has been a considerable rise in
the value of currency in circulation in
Iraq as a result of the war. The report
of the Iraq Currency Board shows that
the currency in circulation at March 31
last was I.D.6,623,290.864, an increase
in a year of I.D.439,997.420. There were
increases in the June, December and
March quarters, but a sharp decline in
the September quarter, which appears to
have been due to an exceptionally large
decrease in the export trade in that
period. Rising prices and the general
tendency to hold larger cash reserves
against possible repercussions of the war
were responsible for the increase in cir-
culation.
Note Circulation
The increase in currency was princi-
pally in notes, one, five, ten and 100
dinar notes all showing rises, but there
was a decrease in the utilisation of | and
| dinar notes (10s. and 5s. respectively).
The decrease in the latter categories since
March 31, 1937, has...”

“...work completed by Balfour, Beatty & Co.
in 1941 was of considerable volume. The
work in hand at present is well up to our
average standard, and will keep us fully
occupied for a considerable time-
Work Resumed in Iraq
I am glad to be able to tell you that
notwithstanding the troubles in Iraq dur-
ing May and June of last year, our staff
carne through their ordeal safely, and
by arrangement with the Government
and the consulting engineers we were able
to recommence part of the works in
July. Progress has been good, and we
anticipate the completion of the essential
portion of the contract early this year.
A section of the works, by arrangement
with the consulting engineers and the
Government, has been suspended. I am
pleased to say that our relations with the
Government of Iraq continue to be of
the most friendly character.
Profit and Dividend
As taxation is now such a substantial
item, and in order to bring our accounts
into line with modern practice, we have
this year shown the profit gross...”
