“...beyond any quick repair. But ultimately, if they
were not driven out, the Germans would be able to obtain
oil - supplies sufficient to carry on mechanised warfare
indefinitely.
Middle East the Objective
That is one facet of the southern flank. There is another
even more important. The Russians are guarding one of
the principal lines of approach to the Middle East. If they
were driven back, not only would a main supply line from
Great Britain and America be closed, but the threat to the
oilfields of Iraq and Iran, to the northern approaches to the
Suez Canal, and even to India itself, at present hypotheti-
cal, would immediately become real and urgent. Fortu-
nately, there are large Allied forces in the Middle East
ready to counter any danger that may appear.
Marshal Timoshenko’s transfer to the south in the place
of Marshal Budyenny, who is reported to be organising a
new army, is a plain indication of the position. He may
yet be able to achieve a stabilised front, which his prede-
cessor failed...”
