“...given to her, or, to be more
accurate, she would not even think of changing it without
such a guarantee. Meanwhile, in circumstances of greatest
delicacy, she had to continue her national existence. She
saw the Balkans overrun, Crete evacuated. Germany and
Italy were now her immediate neighbours: and British
military might seemed far away.
But in this war everything is fluid, even for neutrals.
Since the battle of Crete, the whole Middle Eastern situa-
tion has been profoundly altered, alike, in Iraq, in Syria,
and in Iran. To the south and east of Turkey are now her
friends. That Turkey is pleased with the change is not
to be doubted, whatever reservations she may make upon
the appearance of Russian troops in Iran. But there has
been another, profounder change, from Turkey’s immediate
point of view. The Nazi onslaught on Russia keeps the
whole world on tenterhooks, and, not least, Turkey.

“...the Arab States, with Iraq and Egypt at their head,
should keep out of the war while adopting a benevolent
attitude towards the democracies, is the opinion of Al Itihad.
“ No well-informed person,” says this newspaper, “ can
fail to recognize that Germany’s policy towards the Muslim
countries in general, and the Arab countries in particular,
is only part of her main policy aiming at world domination
and the colonial exploitation of these peoples. It dates
back to the time of Wilhelm II and is now pursued by
Hitler.” Then the writer proceeds to discuss recent events
in Iraq.
‘' Thanks to the activities of a network of spies and agents
throughout the Arab countries in the Near and the Middle
East, Nazi Germany succeeded in gaining over, by deceit,
a number of politicians and statesmen of doubtful standing
in Iraq. These deceived and shortsighted men, known in
the past for their hostile attitude towards the independence
of Iraq and the pan-Arab ideal, seized power in Iraq, over-

“...tion in Syria, the Lebanon, and Palestine, has closed.
INDIA
The National Day of Prayer was observed on Sunday through-
out India in churches, temples, mosques, and gurdwras.
British and Indian Troops are now firmly established in the
interior of Iran. They are holding strategic centres and lines of
communications which -will effectively thwart any possible Axis
designs, says a Simla statement.
The authorities, it is understood, have decided to send back to
Iraq the Iraqi evacuees who arrived at Karachi during the disturb-
ances in Iraq.
The trade representative recently appointed to Teheran by the
Indian Government reached the Iranian capital a few days before
the joint Anglo-Russian action began, it is learned at Simla.
A reminder that they are fighting for the preservation of
righteousness, justice, religion, and freedom was given by Sir
Sikander Hyat Khan, Premier of the Punjab, on the occasion of the
■ second anniversary of the war.
"A righteous cause cannot fail unless we betray it...”
