“...the progress that Iraq has been making in the past decade. It had been thought probable that this and other schemes would be postponed as a result of the war, but it is now announced that the Ministry has been formed under Dr. Sami Showkat.
The fact that this step has been taken suggests that Iraq may also decide to push forward, though no doubt on a modified scale for the time being, with the comprehensive programme of public works that has beep approved. In doing so, the Iraqi authorities would simply be acting in accordance with the obvious maxim that in the present crisis it is the duty of countries just as it is of individuals to “ carry on ” so far as that is possible.
Archaeology in Syria
It is a relief to turn, if only for a moment, from the war to the things of peace, the things that we shall concentrate our attention on again when this calamity is in the past. This reflection is induced by the appearance of the report of the British School of Archaeology in Iraq for the past year...”

“...has been lightened a little, there are still dark clouds about. The Kremlin moves mysteriously. But secrecy does not necessarily imply anything diabolical or sinister.
At the moment of writing it is impossible to predict what countries, other than those already engaged in hostilities, may be involved. The potentialities are indeed incalculable, for in certain contingencies it would seem that not only the Balkans but also the signatories of the Saadabad Pact—Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan—might be actively implicated. (Iraq, of course, is involved from another angle already.) There is, however, no need to take an alarmist view. It is by no means certain that Russia intends to fight battles which might redound to Germany’s advantage; nor is it certain that she will wage warfare to Germany’s disadvantage; we cannot be sure, in fact, that she has resolved to test her troops in actual combat at all.
