B u t Palestine, so often the objective of religious crusades, has now become the centre of an enterprise which appeals more powerfully to the materialist appetite of a potential enemy, the great Iraq oil pipeline which brings an inexhaustible flow of petroleum to the coast.

ever, the Holy Land occupies a peculiar position that places it outside the category of other countries in the Near and Middle East. The Duchess of Kent returned to London on August 27 by air from France, having been on holiday with the Duke of Kent in Yugoslavia.
The King has granted to Mr. Charles Dettmar Royal licence and authority to wear the Insignia of Officer of the Order of the Nile conferred upon him by the King of Egypt.
The King has granted to Mr. Cecil Byford Royal licence and authority to wear the Insignia of the Third Class (Civil Division) of the Order of Al Rafidain conferred upon him by the King of Iraq.
Sir Harold MacMichael, High Commissioner for Palestine, left England on August 24 to return to Jerusalem.
Dr. Matchek, the leader of the Croats, has become Deputy Prime Minister in the new Yugoslav Cabinet formed by M. Svetkovitch.
M. Georges Tatarescu, Roumanian Ambassador to France, has been recalled from Paris, and M. Richard Franassovici, Ambassador in Warsaw, has been appointed in his place.

Electrical Equipment.—The Commercial Secretary to H.M. Embassy in Egypt reports that the Municipalities Department is calling for tenders for the supply and erection at Damietta Town of the electric materials and apparatus required for the extension of the existing electric network. Tenders, endorsed “ Offer for the extension of the electric network at Damietta,” should be addressed to the Direcitor-General, Municipalities Department, Ministry of Public Health, Cairo, by whom they will be received up to noon on October 18, 1939.
