“...Parliament is dissolved and the date of the new elections is not known. The Syrian public has been taken aback by the novelty of these latest moves on the part of the Mandatory Power. The lukewarm political atmosphere is not due to lack of national enthusiasm, but probably to a watchful attitude that has been cultivated during the last twenty years’ struggle for independence. The political pot is boiling under the lid.

“...overseas trade, but while the prospect of that eventuality must be some way off, there is the certainty that year after year for a considerable period there will be an increase in the citrus fruit crop, calling for more shipping for its transport. At present a large part of the crop is transported by foreign lines, and in this direction alone there should be scope for Palestinian ships.
Iraq’s Public Works Programme
Low commodity prices have had an inevitable effect on the economic position of Iraq, and in consequence the Minister of Finance, Sayid Rustam Haidar, has found the drawing-up of the Budget far from the easy task that it has been in recent years. But while various economies have been carried out, notably the reduction of the staff in.the Revenue Department, the continuance of Iraq’s forward policy is illustrated by the division of the Ministry of Economics and Communications into two separate departments—a very necessary change in view of the advancing development of the country—and...”

In the present circumstances it is unlikely that great schemes of road construction will be entered upon in the Middle East, but it is certain that the road problem will receive immediate attention as soon as the political skies clear.
It is reported that valuable new deposits...”
