- Typescript copies of extracts from the journal of John C. Cheveley, clerk with John and William Pattinson Bros, Commission Merchants, Georgetown, British Guiana. Includes general descriptions of the weather and locality in Georgetown from his arrival in 1821. Comments upon local society, including the position of those individuals of multiple heritage - ["mixed race" / "men of colour"] - who could not be admitted into white society. Also describes the household. Refers in detail to his work within the mercantile store. Comments upon the local church, its services, and the mixed nature of its attendees. Includes description of sales of slaves, and the economic position of estate owners. The journal describes in detail the 'Demerara Rising' or slave revolt of 1823. The background is described, such as the suppression of the news of a parliamentary reduction in working hours, and the Governor's proclamation of martial law.
