- Abstract:
- Nimat Bizri was born in Beirut in 1945 but moved with her family to Damascus in 1954. Her father ran a mechanical engineering business and her mother was a homemaker. Nimat completed a BA in French literature at Damascus University and after marrying in 1968 she moved with her husband to the UK and then Sudan, returning to Syria during the Lebanese civil war and then moving to Jordan. She has also spent a lot of time in Canada, where her daughters studied. She moved back to Beirut with her husband in 1997. Nimat first began her humanitarian work in Syria, where she was a member of the board of Nuqtat al-Habib ("A Drop of Milk"), and an organization called Al-Qalb Al-Maftuh, providing charity and social services for the needy. Nimat was also involved in a Canadian NGO that distributes food through mosques and churches to the hungry. When she moved to Lebanon in 1997 she became chair of the Lebanon UN Women's Guild, organizing fundraising events for various charities in Lebanon. Later, Nimat volunteered for a day centre for the elderly in Burj Al-Barajneh refugee camp for several years. She is currently working to assist Syrian refugees in Lebanon, collecting donations and goods in kind. She has raised money for schools for Syrian refugee children, for scholarships for Syrian students and providing sanitation for the informal refugee camps, in addition to donating food and clothes for Syrian refugee families.
