- Abstract:
- Leila El-Ali was born in Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, in 1964. She graduated with a degree in psychology and philosophy in 1989/90. After the 1982 withdrawal of the PLO from Lebanon, Leila was active in pushing for the General Union of Palestinian Students to be recognized at Lebanese universities and in advocating for financial support for Palestinian students. She also worked with GUPS to increase awareness about discrimination against Palestinians in the workforce in Lebanon. Leila joined Association Najdeh in 2004 and has worked on a number of advocacy campaigns for the rights of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, including Palestinian refugee women's rights, and projects to improve the situation of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and empower Palestinian refugee women. - General Note:
- Funding : Women's Activism in the Arab World (2013-2016). This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. It was based on over 100 personal narratives of women activists of different generations from Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
