520 3    |a Bernadette Daou was born in 1979 to a Christian family living in the predominantly Christian area of eastern Beirut. Bernadette studied law at the Lebanese University in Beirut. She was interested in politics but was not able ‘to find herself' amongst the Christian parties. Around the year 2000, through her involvement in a campaign to lower the voting age, she joined the Union of Lebanese Democratic Youth, affiliated to the Lebanese Communist Party. She left the ULDY after becoming frustrated with the treatment of women within the organization and also the lack of willingness to organize a branch in East Beirut. She became close to the Communist Students, a group that split from the Communist party, and participated in numerous campaigns, demonstrations and sit-ins with other independent leftist groups for change, including mobilizations against the WTO, against Israeli military actions during the Second Palestinian Intifada, against the 2003 war on Iraq and against Saddam Hussein and organizing ‘Samedoun’, a civil resistance campaign during the 2006 July War. Bernadette was involved in a number of attempts to create a new leftist alliance, including the Leftist Assembly for Change and the Socialist Forum. In 2010, feeling frustrated, she took a break from leftist politics and enrolled in a university graduate program. In 2011, she joined the demonstrations in solidarity with the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions and became involved in mobilizing against the ‘sectarian regime’ in Lebanon but this movement soon split and dissipated after the onset of the Syrian Revolution.
