Abstract:
Nuha was born in the Ashrafieh neighbourhood of Beirut in 1942. Her father was a merchant, working in the family import-export business and sat on the board of the port of Beirut. Her mother was a homemaker. Nuha attended a French high school near her home and later pursued her dream of studying medicine at the American University of Beirut in 1961. It is at AUB that she met her current husband and a friend who introduced her to the Arab Nationalist Movement. Her involvement with the Arab Nationalist Movement was limited to attending lectures, visiting the refugee camps, collecting donations, and organizing events. Soon after graduation Nuha got married and moved with her husband to Toronto, Canada. She then went into basic science, completing her fellowship at the University of Toronto, working primarily on cell transplantation. After the birth of her first child in 1971, Nuha moved back to Beirut with her family. She was offered a teaching fellowship at AUB in 1972. After the Lebanese Civil War began, she fled with her family for 9 months to Jordan. Eventually Nuha established her own outreach clinic in Shatila refugee camp providing free healthcare and medicine, while she continued teaching at AUB. The clinic is still operating today. During the 2006 war between Israel and Hizbollah, Nuha assisted internally displaced people from the south of Lebanon. ( en )
