520 3    |a Mirna Shidrawi was born on 15 June, 1979 at the American University Hospital in Lebanon. Her late father was a theatre director and playwright and her mother is a choir master. Her parents moved and raised her in the Hamrah neighbourhood, due to their inter-religious marriage, and she attended an American school. Later Mirna attended the American University of Beirut where she studied public administration with a minor in political science. Mirna's first experience with political activism was in 1997 when she joined a small political group called No Frontiers and began writing about student issues in the university paper. At this time she also began volunteering with the Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections in 1997 and has monitored elections in other countries, including Tunisia. She remains a board member for LADE. She was also involved in the creation of the Democratic Left Movement. She participated in the Cedar Revolution, which led to Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon. Mirna was co-founder of a group called "One of Us" that supported independents to stand for Parliament. At the time of the interview, she was working as a training coordinator for a USAID-funded training project with Amideast and World Learner.
