520 3    |a Maha was born in 1979 in the midst of the Lebanese civil war. Her mother was a homemaker and her father had quit politics and began a decorating business. At the age of 14, she was in a car accident that killed her brother and cousin and left her unable to walk. She completed her first degree in sociology at the Lebanese University in Beirut, after which she received a scholarship to complete her MA in the UK, where she studied counseling. She then went to Cambridge University for her PhD, and received a fellowship at Oxford University to research injustices in the education system. Maha returned to Lebanon after nearly 14 years when she was asked to conduct research on education in Lebanon by the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies, where she continues to work, doing advocacy and academic research.
