520 3    |a Haifa Jammal was born on 31 January, 1959, in the Burj El Shamali refugee camp in Lebanon. At 11 years old she became involved with the PFLP girls' division and learned about Marxism and Palestinian national politics. She then studied at university in the field of sociology, but suffered multiple disruptions in her studies due to the civil war in Lebanon in the 1970s and 1980s. Her family was greatly affected by the war, and she lost three of her close relatives. She went back to complete her studies, enrolling for a degree in sociology at the Lebanese University from 1999 to 2002. Haifa was active for a long time with the DFLP and then, after 1979, she became involved with humanitarian work and advocating for women's rights, civil rights and the right of return of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. She worked with Association Najdeh and, at the time of the interview, was working with Norwegian People's Aid. She has advocated for Palestinian rights internationally and has led a number of different campaigns for Palestinian rights.
