- Abstract:
- Asma was born in 1952 in the West Bank but grew up in Amman. Her father had fled to the West Bank from Yaffa during the 1948 war and then was forced to move to Amman to find work as a translator. Her mother was a home maker and then later became a shop keeper. After 1967, Asma became involved in the General Union of Palestinian Women and the General Union of Palestinian Students. Asma studied law at Damascus University and, after graduating, became a lawyer in Jordan. She has specialized in issues of human rights, women’s rights and public freedoms. In the Bar Association, she joined the Human Rights and Public Freedoms Committee and was elected to the Women’s Committee of the Arab Lawyers’ Union, through which she worked on legal reforms for women’s rights. She joined the Jordanian Women's Union and became president in 1993, helping to re-institutionalise the union’s work after a long period of closure. She has also been a member of Amnesty International. As a lawyer and an activist, she has advocated for legal reforms concerning women’s rights, children’s rights and combating violence against women. In 1998, she established Mizan Law Group for Human Rights and the Sisterhood is Global Institute. She has also been appointed to several official positions, amongst them, member of the Royal Commission for Drafting the National Charter (1990), minister of state (2003-2005) and Secretary General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) (2007-2014) At the time of the interview, Asma was serving on the Independent Electoral Commission. She has received several awards in recognition of her service. ( en )

- Funding : Women's Activism in the Arab World (2013-2016). This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. It was based on over 100 personal narratives of women activists of different generations from Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
