Abstract:
Salma was born in Amman in 1971. Her mother was from Madaba and her father was from Jerusalem, but moved to Jordan in 1948. She grew up in a pan-Arab atmosphere and only became aware of hostility between ‘Transjordanians’ and those of Palestinian origin during the first Palestinian intifada. She did her BA in Architecture in Jordan then a MA and Phd in sustainable development at University College London (UCL) She lived in England for four years, America for one year and Saudi Arabia for four years before returning to Jordan, where she worked as a freelance consultant. At university, she started a campaign group that focused on university issues and ran in university elections. In 2007, she became a member of the Jordanian United Front Party and was elected to the executive committee. After standing in the elections in 2013, she left due to differences over the political vision of the party. In 2012, she joined Taqaddam, a civil society organization for promoting democracy, liberalism and the environment, and became the coordinator. Funding : Women's Activism in the Arab World (2013-2016). This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. It was based on over 100 personal narratives of women activists of different generations from Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
