520 3    |a Samar was born in Hebron (West Bank) in 1962. Her father studied English Literature and Philosophy at Cairo University and went on to become a curriculum supervisor. Her mother was a teacher. Samar studied Theatre and Arts at Santa Clara University in the US. There she became involved in the anti-Apartheid movement and found parallels with the situation in Palestine. After university, she worked as a teacher and theatre director. She has directed many plays, some of which she has co-authored with the communities with which she works in Jordan. Her plays address political and social issues. In 2011, Samar joined the 24 March demonstrations and witnessed the repression of the protests. She has worked with young people to teach community organising, as well as being involved in organisations promoting political reform. She maintains her belief in the arts being a vehicle for political engagement and activity. At the time of the interview, Samar was working for Ruwwad, a community development organization based on public-private partnerships.
