520 3    |a Emily was born in Salt in 1932. Her father was a merchant and her mother was a home maker. She moved to Amman at the age of 5 years old. She graduated with a diploma in book keeping and secretarial skills. She worked in a bank for 7 years, until she was fired for trying to organise an employees’ union. Emily initially became politically active with the Jordanian Communist Party and participated in the protests against the Baghdad Pact in 1955. As a result of her involvement, she was placed under house arrest for 6 months after 1957 (when the regime introduced martial law) Emily was also one of the founding members of the Arab Women’s Union, headed by Emily Bisharat, in 1954 ,and campaigned for Jordanian women’s right to vote. After the AWU was closed in 1957, she continued to work underground for women’s rights. In 1970, she founded the Arab Women Organization, which she headed for 20 years. She was also a founding member of the Jordanian Women's Union in 1974. Emily has also participated in international forums, such as the International Women's Democratic Federation. In addition to campaigning for women’s rights, she has also advocated for Palestinian rights internationally. Emily has run in parliamentary elections and was appointed to the Jordanian senate. She has received national and international recognition for her service.
