520 3    |a Leila was born in Amman in 1944. Her father was a merchant and her mother was a home maker. She first became interested in politics and political work during the Suez Crisis and attended rallies in Jordan in support of Gamal Abdel-Nasser. She was politically active at university and was involved in supporting Palestinian women refugees after the 1967 war. This led to the creation of the Arab Women Organization wih her sister, Emily, where she has worked since 1970 and of which she is currently the director. She is also a member of the Jordanian Communist Party, sitting on the central committee and working to mobilise women’s participation in the party. Due to her work on women's issues, she has been attacked by the government, Islamist groups and the tribes of Jordan. Her organization is particularly in conflict with the Islamists, who are opposed to CEDAW. Leila was initially hopeful about the Arab uprisings as a springboard for improving the situation of women, but, with the rise of Islamist parties, she has become more sceptical. She participated in the demonstrations in Jordan in 2011, for political reform as well as for women’s rights. She was involved in the campaign to give Jordanian women married to foreigners the right to pass on their nationality to their children. At the time of the interview, Leila expressed concerns over the lack of solidarity between women’s rights NGOs in Jordan and the wider Arab world.
