520 3    |a Haifa was born in Palestine in 1931 and grew up in Nablus. Her father died when she was 4 years old. She attended the Women’s Training College in Jerusalem, graduating in 1948. After that she began working as a teacher in the West Bank. She married a Jordanian physician who was the health minister from 1970 until 1977. He passed away in a helicopter crash, which left her to raise her 6 children alone. She began her voluntary work after getting married, encouraged by her late husband. In 1971, she founded the White Beds Society and the Golden Age Home to care for elderly people. Over the years, Haifa has won many prizes for her voluntary work. She also chairs the Jordan Psychiatric Rehabilitation Society, which works with psychiatric and addiction cases, was a co-founder and president of the General Federation of Jordanian Women (from 1980) and a member of the Amman municipal council. She finds it increasingly difficulty to get funding from the government for her societies and believes that government should play a part in helping civil society.
