Notes

Abstract:
Mozn was born in Saudi Arabia in 1979. Her mother was a professor of history and her father worked in college administration. She moved to Egypt during her teenage years, settling in Alexandria where she did a degree in Greek Roman literature, graduating in 2000. She was involved in the Rotary Club while at university, doing charity work. She then moved to Cairo and studied for a diploma in human rights and civil society at Cairo University, and then an MA in international human rights law at the American University of Cairo. She became interested in women's issues and founded Nazra for Feminist Studies in 2008. Nazra has focused on connecting personal and political issues and opening up questions of sexuality. She participated in the 2011 Revolution through her involvement with the Front to Protect Egyptian Protestors. After Mubarak stepped down, Nazra began working in the Egyptian governorates, discussing issues of gender and sexuality there. While she did see some positive aspects coming out of the 2011 Revolution, Mozn believed that issues of rape and sexual violence in public spaces were not sufficiently addressed and that there was too much focus on the political arena.
