Abstract:
Salma was born in Cairo in 1987. Both her parents were accountants. She attended Cairo University, studying in the English department. Her earliest political involvement came with joining protests against the Iraq War and in support of Hassan Nasrallah during the 2006 Lebanon War. After graduating, she worked with the Forum for Women and Development, organising events, conferences and panel discussions. She became involved in the 2011 Revolution from the beginning, joining demonstrations and volunteering with the Hisham Mubarak Law Centre. After Hosni Mubarak stepped down, she joined Nazra, a feminist organization and became involved in political parties. First, she joined the Egyptian Social Democratic Party in 2011, but resigned to join the Socialist Popular Alliance Party. After the ousting of Mohammed Morsi, she resigned from the SPAP due to their support for the government and the military. She was also involved with the Association of Progressive Youth of the Revolution. Finally, she helped to form the Women and Constitution group, which made proposals for gender-sensitive articles in the 2012 Egyptian Constitution and campaigned against Article 219, which Salma believes would have codified elements of sharia into Egyptian law.
