520 3    |a Azza was born in Giza in 1966. Her father was a small business owner and her mother was a housewife. She studied law at Cairo University, graduating in 1989. During her university studies she became politically active, joining the Nasserist Arab Studies Association. She also joined the Tagammu` Party at this time. After graduating, she worked with the Arab Organization for Human Rights and was briefly arrested after exposing a case of torture by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior whilst interviewed on the BBC. She founded the Centre for Egyptian Women’s Legal Assistance (CEWLA) in the 1990s in order to address women’s legal rights. In addition to providing legal assistance, the centre has also tackled taboo subjects such as ‘honour’ crimes, early marriage and advocating new interpretations of Islam. CEWLA has also worked with other civil society organizations, such as the New Woman Foundation and Al-Nadeem Centre. She participated in the 18-day sit-in in Tahrir Square in 2011. At the time of the interview, Azza was worried about the growing power of Salafists and the growing influence of the Ministry of Interior in Egypt.
