|a Mai was on 12 August, 1982, in Cairo. She grew up in Shoubra. Her mother was a factory worker and her father was an accountant. She went to Ayn Shams University, studying libraries and information. When she was at university she became politically active, joining the student council and regularly opposing the dean and the security forces at university. After graduating, she first worked in public schools, then in an environmental rights office and finally joined the New Woman Foundation where she worked on the Women and Work campaign which highlighted discriminatory employment practices. Before the revolution, she also helped to form the Young Arab Women Network and the Conference of Civil Society Young Activists. Mai participated in the revolution, going to protests both against Mubarak and later against Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood. She was inspired to join the revolution after witnessing iolence against women, female objectification in the media and police torture. At the time of the interview, she believed that the aims pf the revolution needed to expand into civil society and fight against the traditions of Egyptian society that continue to oppress and violate women and their rights. She was worried that focusing too much on the political aspects of the revolution would leave cultural matters to Islamist and conservative groups who want to maintain women's subjugation. |
