520 3    |a Nihal was born in Cairo in 1985, growing up in Nasr City. Her mother was a project officer for an international organisation and her father was an accountant but they divorced when she was young. She got a bacherlor's degree in electronics and communication engineering at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology. She graduated in 2009. While there, she was the head of the student council for two years, getting involved in charity and development work with the university. After graduating, she joined a nonprofit organisation called Solia as an IT consultant for three years. After this she travelled around Europe for a time. When she came back she began working with Mawared. She also co-fonded Basma/Imprint Movement. It aimed to tackle issues such as sexual harassment and discrimination against women. They ran workshops and awareness programs. Nihal was not initially involved with the 25 January 2011 uprising, but became involved due to the levels of police violence she witnessed. However her attitude toward the revolution soured, particularly as she sees groups fighting each other over political power rather than working together. In 2013, she became involved with Ikhtiyar ('Choice'), a group that researches gender. However, she doesn't consider herself as a feminist, but rather a humanist.
