520 3    |a Salma was born in Cairo in 1985. Her mother is a film-maker and leftist political activist originally from Lebanon and her father is a doctor who now works in a development consultancy. He is also a political activist and member of the Socialist Popular Alliance. Salma studied anthropology at university. At high school, Salma participated in solidarity activities with the Second Palestinian Intifada. Later she participated in Kefaya demonstrations and then helped to create an anti-regime and pro-Palestinian group called ‘Kulina Moqawma’. Salma was involved with the 25 January 2011 uprising from the beginning and then in anti-SCAF activism and writing. She opposed the Muslim Brotherhood and what she saw as their alliance with the Egyptian army. At the time of the interview, she had reduced her involvement in revolutionary activities. She had stopped writing for the movement and had many issues with the way it was working, particularly the way that activists were polarized as either pro-regime or pro-Brotherhood, neither of which was adequate for change in Egypt and the wider region.
