520 3    |a Salma was born in Giza in 1980. She studied for her Bachelor's Degree at the American University of Cairo, in political science and business administration. She went to do a Master's Degree at the London School of Economics in science in information systems. In 2005, she began working in the oil and gas industry in Egypt and few years later went on to do a graduate diploma in Middle East studies at the American University of Cairo. It was while at university that she became interested in political and social activism by becoming a member of the Model United Nations and Model Arab League. She was also influenced by her mother, a political campaigner, and her grandfather, who was a minister for justice in the 1960s and who pushed for more equality for women in Egypt. In 2005, Salma joined some feminist organizations but soon left them. Salma participated in the 25 January 2011 uprising, and became more politically active during this period. She joined the Egypt Freedom Party, as she saw their liberal values of equality and human rights as reflective of her ideals. She is a member of their central party committee where party policy is determined. Salma also joined a women's movement, Bahiyya Ya Masr, which was a reaction against the rising Islamist influence in the Egyptian revolution. Later on, after the election of President Mursi, she campaigned against him and his Islamist allies, eventually participating in the 30 June protests against Mursi. As of the interview, she is hopeful of the military rule in Egypt and still involved in fighting for women's issues.
