520 3    |a Mona was born in Cairo in 1974. Her father was a freelancer and her mother a housewife. She grew up in Cairo and attended Cairo University, where she majored in literature, graduating in 1997. It was while at university that she became involved in political movements and began to write journalistic pieces with a specific focus on women's issues. After graduating, Mona became involved with the New Woman Foundation and the Journalists' Syndicate, running for elections as part of the ‘Independence movement’, helping to found a committee in solidarity with the Second Palestinian Intifada and campaigning for freedom of the press. She also helped to found Journalists for Change, as part of the change movement after 2003. With the 25 January 25 uprising, Mona began organising politically, helping to found the Socialist Popular Alliance. Eventually, she left this party and helped found the Bread and Freedom Party, becoming involved with their media communications. At the time of the interview, she was still involved with the Bread and Freedom Party as well as working with the New Woman Foundation.
