520 3    |a Nawla was born in 1949 in Cairo. Her father was a communist lawyer for trade unionists and her mother was also a communist activist. Nawla began studying at university in 1967 and participated in the demonstrations against the army generals following the 1967 military defeat. From 1973 to 1986 Nawla was a member of the Egyptian Communist Party. In 1975 Nawla got married and had a daughter. She divorced her husband in 1980 and subsequently she and her daughter travelled to Czechoslovakia where her parents were living at the time. For 3 months Nawla attended the Leninist International School in Moscow. After the assassination of President Sadat in October 1981, she returned to Egypt. From 1984 until 1990, Nawla worked for the International Population Council. During this time she began her feminist activism and joined the New Woman Foundation (NWF) After 1990 Nawla worked as a teacher in Libya and then became the administrative manager of the Arab Women's Center for Training and Research in Tunisia. She returned from Tunisia in 1993 and became the coordinator of the Beijing Trust Fund in relation to the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. From 1995 to 2002 Nawla was the project manager for the Arab Network of NGOs. After this, she became chair of the NWF and oversaw the organization’s programme with women industrial workers after 2007. Nawla participated in the 2011 Egyptian uprising and, afterwards, was one of the founders of the Feminist NGO Coalition and was opposed to the Muslim Brotherhood rule. She believes that 30 June 2013 was a popular uprising not a military coup. At the time of the interview, Nawla continued to be a member of the New Woman Foundation.
