520 3    |a Maha was born in 1960 in Cairo. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a university professor of chemistry. In 1967, Maha's family moved to Nigeria for her father’s work. She returned to Cairo at the age of 11. Maha studied at Cairo University and received a BA in English literature. Whilst studying, she got married and had 2 children. After finishing her first degree, Maha studied for her masters and began teaching at Hilwan University. She then went on to to do her PhD and started teaching at Cairo University English Department. Maha was a member of Kefaya, the Egyptian Movement for Change, and Egyptian Women for Change. She participated in the 25 January 2011 uprising. After the ousting of Mubarak, she joined the Egyptian Social Democratic Party and became an active member of both the women's committee and the evaluation committee in the Giza branch. At the time of the interview, Maha was scaling down her involvement in the party.
