520 3    |a Amal was born on 8 March 1980 in Dubai. Her family moved to Egypt when she was 6 years old. Her father worked for an electrical generator company and her mother was a housewife. Amal completed a BA in English and comparative literature at the American University of Cairo with a minor in theatre and a Master's Degree in Gender Studies at Trinity College in Dublin. After her studies, Amal was involved in various international development projects before beginning her work with Nazra for Feminist Studies in 2013 The 25 January 2011 uprising were the first time for Amal to become involved in activism. Through her participation in protests after February 2011 she became involved in the Free Egyptian Movement (Misr-Al Hurra) to support other revolutionary activism on the ground. Amal also participated in anti-sexual harrassment activism. At the time of the interview Amal was continuing her work with Nazra in the women human rights defender programme.
