520 3    |a Heba Helmi was born in Cairo in 1969. Her father was a surgeon and her mother an anesthesiologist. In 1986, Heba began studying engineering at university before majoring in fine arts. After graduation, Heba became involved with some colleagues in the Committee for the Defense of National Culture and began publishing a newsletter called Al-Muwagha. She went on to co-found the Center for Socialist Studies and also participated in the Revolutionay Socialists and the Kefaya movement. In 2003, Heba began teaching the history of fine art at the College of Fine Arts in Cairo, before reisgning to complete her master's degree. She was also active in the New Woman Foundation.
