- Abstract:
- Fatma was born in June 1982. Her mother was the deputy of a bank branch and her late father worked in the Egyptian Ministry of Finance and had studied Islamic studies. Fatma grew up in Cairo and completed her first degree at Cairo University in the Faculty of Economics and Political Science. After graduation she began working for the Cairo Institute for Human Rights. After this, Fatma left Egypt to complete an MA in Human Rights and Democratization in Malta. When she returned to Egypt in June 2007, she co-founded Nazra for Feminist Studies, an NGO promoting feminism in Egypt by conducting feminist research and providing legal and political support to women. After leaving Nazra in 2013, Fatma became a freelance translator from English to Arabic was still working as a translabor at the time of the interview. Fatma participated in the 25 January 2011 uprisings. She has also been involved in Nubian Youth Activism and is a member of the Nubian Democratic Union, where she was a representative for Nubian rights in the constitution drafting committee. ( en )

- Funding : Women's Activism in the Arab World (2013-2016). This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. It was based on over 100 personal narratives of women activists of different generations from Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
