520 3    |a Laila was born in London, England, in 1956 but grew up in Cairo. Her parents were university professors in the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University. She graduated from Cairo University in 1977 with a degree in mathematics. After graduation, Laila immediately began working as a teaching assistant at Cairo University and went on to complete her doctorate in maths. Laila's activism began during her university years when she participated in numerous demonstrations in the late 1970s, known as the bread uprisings. She was a co-founder of Kefaya- the Egyptian movement for change - and was involved in the March 9 Movement for the independence of Universities. She was also an active member in the Egyptian Organization before the group split into separate factions.
