Burial may not be the appropriate word here. Some scenes caputured by Dr. Gupta depict of religious element, but appear to be more of a 'commitment' rather than interment. While cremated remains in Hinduism may be commited to the Ganges, these books have not been cremated as they might in Judaism. Conjecture: it may be possible that committing of religious texts to the river may bear some connection to the Hindu goddes Saraswati, goddess of knowledge and wisdom - theoretically encapsulated in written form. Saraswati is also associated with rivers.

General Note:
Ram Das Gupta established the Vrindaban Research Institute [VRI) in the upper floors of a pilgrim hostel owned by his family in 1968. The VRI was dedicated to the task of collecting, cataloguing and conserving some of the manuscripts that were mouldering away in their thousands in temple storerooms all across the town. Dr Gupta recruited a small team of local scholars and enabled a number of young people to acquire the skills of manuscript conservation.
