|a The John Williams was a missionary sailing ship launched in 1844 from Harwich, Essex in England. It was owned by the London Missionary Society (LMS) having been paid for by English school children. The John Williams was named after John Williams (1796–1839), a missionary active in the South Seas (southern Pacific Ocean). The ship sank on 16 May 1864 at Pukapuka (at the time, known as Danger Island) in the Cook Islands. It would be replaced by a succession of ships named the John Williams, also sailing for the London Missionary Society in the Pacific. |
