Cultural Context:
"Bosjesman", "Boesman", "Boushuana", or "Briqua" in Dutch or Hottentot in Englsih is a term that was historically used to refer to the Khoikhoi, the non-Bantu indigenous nomadic pastoralists of South Africa and Botswana. Originally, "Bosjesman" or "Boesman" was a characterisation of a person from the Boesmans River watershed. Today, a "Bosjesman" or "Boschemen" is the Dutch or Afrikaans term for a "Bushman" though the word may also be derogatory. "Boushuana" was a precursor of Bechuana as in British Bechuanaland and Bechuanaland Protectorate, the latter now Botswana. "Briqua" was another term, less frequently used by early European settlers, for the Khoikhoi people.

Notes

The past, particularly of colonising cultures has not been kind to the colonised. This item was selected for digitisation not to offend but to reflect an historic perspective, in this instance to literally illustrate what was in the mind of the coloniser. ( English )
