“...contributions, along with an essay by Chefusian John Hoyte (USA), and several non-Chefusians.
It is time to say my formal farewell. This issue of the magazine is the culmination of 16 issues that I have produced since 2003. It has been a very important part of my life, and I have constantly received expressions of thanks from readers who are grateful to me for keeping the Association alive. My response is always that it has been an immense pleasure; when you enjoy something it does not seem like work. I am going to miss doing this, but for the coming year or two there is much further work necessary to put the Association to bed, activities that are outlined on page 8.4...”

On March 28 at the Golden Gulf Hotel, where the CSA delegation stayed, Li Xin hosted a celebratory dinner for the visiting Chefusians and local Yantai friends who were instrumental in making the project a success. At this dinner Ian Grant presented him with a special plaque, formally designating him as an Honorary Member of the Chefoo Schools Association. Speech by Ian Grant, Chefoo Schools Association
Vice-Mayor Zhang Bo and honored guests,
M r|Jfx, S-'fji.JfeA?,
I bring greetings from the many members of the Chefoo Schools Association. We are the alumni of the Chefoo School. More than 2000 students attended the school here in Yantai from the time it was established in 1881 until the school was interned at Weifang by the Japanese in 1943. After the War the school was re-established in Shanghai, and then at Lushan, Jiangxi. There were several small Chefoo Schools in East Asia following our days in China, the most prominent being in Malaysia, which was closed in 2001. However, the Chefoo Schools Association,
made up of alumni of the schools, and the annual Chefoo Magazine, of which I am editor, have both been operating continuously for 110 years.

Speech by Mr. Jeff Liu
Chairman of the Yantai Museum’s Board of Directors
AEil'A W]: AAEEff!
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good Morning!
Today, we gather here to witness the grand opening of "Our Budding Youth: the Exhibition of Historical Materials of Chefoo School in Yantai", a donation of artifacts and materials from the Chefoo Schools Association. First of all, please let me, on behalf of the Yantai Municipal Bureau of Culture, Broadcasting, Press and Publications and Yantai Municipal Museum, to present my warm welcome and compliments to all the delegates from the Chefoo Schools Association, to everybody attending this event, as well as every friend from the media!
In the year of 1879, Mr. James Hudson Taylor chose Yantai and established China Inland Mission School, which was named Chefoo School in 1881. This school with beautiful seaside location has been known as "the best school east of Suez Canal", just because of its typical British curriculum under...”

“...of the august Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) were persuaded that they needed me to start up an internal patents, licensing and commercialisation section. So, I entered the 'promised land' and partook of its fruits until 1984, when I left to start up my own patents and innovation consulting firm, which kept me busy for another 25 years. Was this Stanley Houghton's vision for me back at Kuling?*
Steve Harnsberger, President of the Kuling American School Association and a second generation KAS offspring, responded to Paul Grant's Attic story when I shared it with him: (Ian Grant)
"This is a beautiful story like many of the young boyhood memories from Kuling. In reading Tales Out School (the KAS journal), I remember stories of both the attic and the basement, hidden and dark spaces where the Kuling kids explored the forbidden rooms.
"Paul's tale is all the more amazing as he discovered not only memories of Kuling American School but also his love of engineering...”

For the past twenty years Moon has been a constant friend and facilitator on the many visits to Lushan by former students, their families and friends, both from the Kuling American School, and the Chefoo School. In 2012, when the CSA-sponsored trip to former sites of the Chefoo School visited Guling by a delegation of 15 Chefusians and family members, we decided Moon was worthy of being awarded an honorary membership of the Chefoo Schools Association. He was, to my knowledge, the first person from China to have accepted this honour, and was joined in March of this year by a second remarkable member in the person of Li Xin at Yantai (see page 10 of this issue)....”

“...The property was developed out of nothing in a short 20 years, 1919 to 1938. Given that it had been abandoned for 10 years before it was acquired by the CIM, it was in remarkably good shape.
I first came to know Sterling in 2002. After the very tragic and untimely death of David Michell, the Canadian Director ofOMF, and Chairperson of the North American branch of the Chefoo School Association, I acquired his CSA role. With it came the regular exchange between the Chefoo Magazine and China Connections, a US-based quarterly journal for Old China Hands. In it I read of an upcoming Kuling American Schools Association reunion in northern Georgia State the coming April. This was a weekend affair, Thursday evening to noon Sunday. The contact person was Sterling Whitener, and I quickly inquired if my wife and I could attend.

“...Our meeting took place prior to the meal, in a lounge. I greeted the group with greetings from regular attendees from Toronto who attend their annual reunions, pointing out that Toronto and Melbourne are the only places where regular reunions still take place, and have done so for many years—for Toronto since 1913, or for 105 years. I gave an overview of my personal history with the Chefoo School, and my involvement in the Chefoo Schools Association since the 1970s. I mentioned that I took over as chairperson of the North America Branch of the Association in 1998 following the very untimely and tragic death of David Michell. In 2003 I took on the roll of editor and publisher of the Chefoo Magazine, and shortly after that I arranged for the opening of a North America CSA archival collection at the Billy Graham Library at Wheaton College near Chicago. It is connected with the CIM/OMF collection that has been located there for many years. Following this a gave an overview of the development...”
