(November 30, 2008). Although I would have loved to have attended your birthday party, I am very happy that a number of your friends are joining you in this celebration. I always enjoy hearing from you, and appreciate your regular letters to me, and your faithful updating of your Chefoo Schools Association membership. Always the optimist, I see that you have paid dues for 2009 and 2010. At the Toronto Chefoo Reunion in April (2008) we were blessed with the presence of another centenarian, Pearl Dobbs, who reached 100 on February 23rd. It is wonderful that two members of our North America Branch are so considerate as to help us celebrate our Association centennial this year, having been established on January 29th, 1908. “...The Chefoo Magazine, 2009 Page 36 IfT'rom very early in its existence the Chefoo Schools Association has had a constitution, and this has JL changed very little over the years. It provides for branches in Great Britain, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. It also designates the Great Britain Branch as General Council, which holds executive functions on behalf of the branches. The constitution also allows the designation of the honorary positions of President and one or more Vice-Presidents. Presidents or Vice Presidents do not hold executive functions on behalf of the Association, unless they have been independently elected or appointed by a branch. As 2009 commenced our President was Dr. James Taylor, and our Vice Presidents were John Miller and Barry McKessar. It has been a tradition, at least in the post-China period, that principals of Chefoo Schools would often be appointed Vice Presidents, which is why John and Barry were appointed, John in 1993, and Barry in 2000. “...The Chefoo Magazine, 2009 Page 40 Peter is the Chairman of the Great Britain Branch, and therefore is Chairman of the General Council of the Chefoo Schools Association. This version of the essay has been edited to eliminate abbreviated spelling. Three Chefusians were members of this illustrious band: Doug Sadler (standing, 4th from the left), Peter Bazire (standing, 6th from the left), and Norman Cliff (crouching, second from the left). I was born in Szechwan in 1930 and made the long journey with my family to Chefoo (now Yantai) in 1935. My parents joined the teaching staff, and my elder brother and I settled into school life very happily. My mother, Mrs Eileen Bazire, B.Mus., took charge of music in the school and she soon had Theo and me learning musical instruments: piano and violin respectively. I did not practise as much as I should, but a flair for music (perfect pitch, a good sense of harmony and an unusual memory) carried me along. Later my mother assembled an orchestra for 10...”

For our program this year we viewed a DVD produced by Ian Grant, covering his trip to China in 2007, which included a reunion at Kuling at the former cite of both the Kuling American School, and later the Chefoo School. Other places visited were Shanghai, Hangzhou, Jingdezhen, Wuhan, the Three Gorges Dam at Yichang, and Guilin. Ian Grant Seattle, September 2, 2009 The Kuling American School Association met in Seattle early in September, 2009 with a delegation from Lushan (Kuling) to sign an accord related to the planned Lushan Cultural Institute. Ian Grant joined them, and while in Seattle, with the kind assistance of Tom Springer, a CSA luncheon was held on September 2 at the Peking House restaurant. Chefusians who attended from Washington State were: Molly (Springer) Johnston, Margaret (Hillis) Pagler (with husband, Jack), David Allen, John Hoyte, and Tom Springer (with wife, Jenny). From...”

After 43 years of working for Queen Anne's Bounty offices at Westminster in London, England, she retired first to Redhill south of London and then to Milward Home in Tunbridge Wells, where she lived independently in her own flat until close to her death. Even though she did not return to China as did her parents and siblings, she retained an active interest in the CIM/OMF throughout her life and served as secretary for the UK Branch of the Chefoo Schools Association for several years. Edith loved to travel throughout England and to other countries where her family members resided. She maintained a great interest in her nieces and nephews scattered in New Zealand, Australia and the United States of America. She served her God and people faithfully throughout her life, always helping others when she could, and sustaining them through a devout prayer ministry. THE CHEFOO SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION The Chefoo Schools Association was founded in 1908. Its purpose is to operate an association for all former scholars and members of the staff of the Chefoo Schools; to sustain interest amongst its members in matters concerning the Schools and in one another; to afford means whereby its members are kept in touch with one another; and to promote friendly relationships between all persons in any way connected with the Schools.
