Lt. Moore was part of a daring 7-man parachute rescue team that liberated the Weihsien Concentration Camp, August 17 1945. WEIHSIEN INTERNEES CREATE INTERNET MEMORY BOARD
Mary Taylor Previte, ’39-’45
When National Public Radio last year broadcast the story of the liberation of Weihsien Concentration Camp, it launched a tidal wave of nostalgia that has produced a happy connection for former Weihsien internees to swap memories.
Chefusians and others who lived through the Weihsien years now post memories and memory pictures via the Internet on the WEIHSIEN MEMORY BULLETIN BOARD. Writers span the globe — from New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain,

Several memories and tributes in this issue of THE CHEFOO MAGAZINE appeared first on the Weihsien Memory Board. Here are a few:
Weihsien Liberation Day: “My friend and classmate David Birch tells me that he and I were playing pingpong in Kitchen #1 when the sound of the aeroplane drew us outside. When we got to the front gates of the camp, they were open and we went out. I followed the kids ahead of us at a run. That’s when I was stopped...”

“...birds, chewing up bread and letting the baby birds eat out of my mouth. Remember the pigeons in Block 23? We Chefoo boys created a bird house from a rotted tree stump that we propped on the rain gutter outside our third floor room in the hospital. We watched a sparrow hatching its eggs and feeding its fledglings in the rotted stump. I still have my bird watching journal.
Peter Bazire and I were partners in our Boy Scout‘survival adventure’ in Weihsien - all with the advance permission from the Japanese. We had to hike around the camp and build a fire. We were given only two matches for building a survival fire with twigs. We cooked a meal — a boiled potato-in a can over the fire and ‘camped out,’ but I can’t remember where we slept — maybe under the stairs at the hospital. Peter Bazire and I still have our journal of our ‘survival adventure’ ”

“...HOW CHEFOO TEACHERS SHELTERED US
David Birch
(Reprinted from the Weihsien Memory Bulletin Board)
Some of my happiest boyhood memories are of our days in internment in Temple Hill and Weihsien.
Mrs Dunachie, the mother of several Chefoo boys, spoke at morning ‘Prayers' at the Prep School with a long and helpful meditation on the Israelites in Egypt before and after that long captivity. Then in 1942, Alfie Binks and I and our classmates who were moving from Upper One to Second Form (from the Prep to the Boys School), received more of the same topic as our saintly headmaster, Mr. P. A. Bruce, led us day after day in worship, first at the Boys School and then in the big Center House at the Temple Hill Camp.
One night, a cluster of us boys in the attic (where we lived) gathered around Mr. Stanley Houghton. “What would happen if the Japanese won the war?” we asked.
“The Japanese won’t win the war.” I clearly remember Mr. Houghton’s confident reply.
“But what would happen IF they won the war?”...”

EASTER IN CHEFOO 1933
David Parry
I was recently sorting out some of the accumulation of papers relating to Chefoo days when i came across a decrepit notebook. On examination I found that it was a daily record of 4 days spent in my last Easter holidays at Chefoo. Together with Mr Duncan, Mr Welch and Stan Rist we went up to the Pinnacle to stay for 4 days in the temple guest room nestling in a gully just under the summit at 1,000 ft. We did our own catering and eggs fried, boiled and poached featured prominently on each menu. One of the priests slept in the same room as us and completed his ablutions at 5.30 each morning. Lights Out were at 8 00 pm and then till 9.00 pm we listened to the chanting of the priests accompanied...”

“...M.?’
’No, the Baptist Missionary Society, but my brother and I went to a C.I.M. school.’ ’Chefoo?’
’Yes.’
’My wife taught in a C.I.M. school in Malaya!’
At about this point the train arrived and we both got in the same carriage but did not sit together. As I sat there I thought, ’This is silly. I must ask him his wife’s maiden name (Sibary) as my brother had been going to Chefoo reunions and might have met her.’ I knew he would be interested to know.
So I went to ask him and found him writing out his name, address and phone number so that I could keep in contact with him and I gave him mine in exchange. He then came to sit with me and we continued our conversation about China and the Far East until we reached his station, by which time I felt we were strangers no longer. I was very happy to meet his wife when they subsequently visited my home. Their names are Cecil and Mary McSparron.

“...busy life in Hamilton as an active widow, into local & Diocesan church affairs and theological studies, still does some part-time teaching and sees as much as she can of her 3 grandchildren. Our brother WILBUR BUTLER [Malaysia Chefoo] is retired in Adelaide and spends many hours on his computer preparing Bible study notes for use in the various cell groups in their church. With 2 grandchildren and one of the twins getting married April 2001, plus keeping in touch with their daughter in Europe, life is never dull. Since his serious fall some years ago Wilbur has to pace himself and needs rest after major events but is one very cheerful chappie!

FRED COLLARD (Malaysia Houseparents 1963-68) We have enjoyed two reunions in this final year of the Chefoo Schools. Last October while visiting Barbara’s eldest son in Atlanta we made a 900 mile round trip to visit our former school nurse, BETTY (SPEAS) MULLIGAN and her family in Raonoke West Virginia. PAULINE DUNN (Malaysia 1977-89) A sad year as Chefoo closes in June. I will be attending along with others who were there with me, both staff and pupils. It will be a service of thanksgiving for all God has done through Chefoo. Do pray for the local Asian staff.
It has been a good year. Work has been a challenge, yet a joy when you see a family back on their feet. I am still involved in my church but teaching 3-5’s now. We praise the Lord for the increase in young couples and for what he does at Gunnersbury.
Do come to the Chefoo reunion. Chris Macqueen and I hope to show a video and pictures of the Chefoo Thanksgiving event.

I have had a warm welcome from MARGARET & MARY WELLER, who are in Cornford Court, ELVA & WINNIFRED COOKE, JOY & IRENE KING and others and DAVID PARRY who was in the same form at Chefoo. I am well settled and have had a warm welcome here too in this friendly house with its beautiful gardens. I hope to be at the reunion in July - with the Pembury coach.
DR JOHN (JACK) GODDARD JONES (1918-19) My time as pupil in Chefoo Prep School was brief but the memories of those days remain vivid and meaningful, and so do some of the names of my contemporaries, such as - PERCY MOORE, RAYMOND JOYCE, STANLEY CONWAY, ERIC EMBERY, and some of the teachers, such as Misses BLACKMORE, PRIESTMAN and GORDON.

Their subsequent postings and furloughs resulted in my attending a total of seven schools between 1918 and 1928, which can be listed as follows:- Chefoo, Xian, California, New Jersey, Wales (two schools), and finally London, i.e. Eltham College, (school for sons of missionaries).
The Chefoo Magazine for Summer 2000, contained two articles of interest for me, by G David Birch and Frank Moore, respectively. The former describes the Christian influence of Chefoo, and his becoming a Christian. I, too, made a profession of conversion in Chefoo. The latter describes the work of Percy Moore in Hanzhong Church in the Province of Shensi (Shaansi), and mentions Xian and San Yuan.

“...am too old for this sort of thing. Like 8 hours on rice sacks in a boat with 2’/z feet between the rice sacks and ceiling! The youth work is going well and challenging too. I love and enjoy these kids all the same. So sad to hear Chefoo Malaysia is closing next month.
BARBARA (TOOTILL) SQUNG (1965-70) It would be interesting to know how long families graced Chefoo. ie my brothers, sisters and I were collectively at Chefoo Malaysia for about 14 years. I think my older brother DAVID first went in 1960 and my younger brother ALAN left about 1974. Were or are there any families who have had 2 generations at Chefoo?
I have been delighted to receive letters and e-mails from school friends not seen or heard of for many years because of the up-coming closure of Chefoo Malaysia and the planned Reunion.

DOROTHY (WALKER) TOOP (1926-36) A privilege of advancing years (which advance faster and faster!) is to reminisce. And as Boat Race Day and Foundation Day came around this year and as today we watch nations compete on the waters of Seville, Spain, in their sleek craft, I for one think back to exactly 65 years ago when with great joy I stroked Hero, swelling with pride as my parents had just arrived in time from Szechwan, and were in the following launch. What blessings Chefoo brought - not only to me and my 2 older brothers, but later in a different location to our 4 kids, all of whom thought, at least for a time, that Chefoo School was THE BEST. Now all 4 are wed and love to serve the Lord - 2 are missionaries. We have 2 great-grandsons. There is a very real and deep sadness somehow, at the last and final closing of Chefoo School after 120 years. But let me, at the...”
