“...FROM THE EDITOR
This issue of the magazine is one of celebration touched with sorrow.
Sorrow at the death of David Michell and the imminent closure of Chefoo Japan but celebration of David's life and the life of the school.
Celebration of 90 years of the Chefoo Schools Association. How much longer can it continue? A letter from one of the younger members reads: 'I find the magazine generally irrelevant to me because usually only 2 pages of the whole magazine have anything vaguely relative for me to read. What happens when the oldies die? Is it just a magazine for early Chefusians?1
Believe it or not, I print ALL the items that come in to me from post-China Chefusians but not all that comes from China Chefusians. I'm sure it is time that more of the younger generations of Chefusians were on the committees. Any offers will be welcomed with open arms. It is up to you!!!
I have had some urgent faxes and letters asking if I have received material that you have sent in and I have had to phone...”

“...and also to commemorate the life of DAVID MICH ELL and his contribution to the CSA we are inviting members to send in gifts with their subscriptions so that they can be given to get some useful equipment for the new Hostel in Japan which is opening to house children after the closing of the Chefoo School in Japan.
As far as the Great Britain Reunion is concerned on Saturday 12 September we hope to have three short talks on the Chefoo Schools - before the 39-45 war, during the wartime years and John Miller has kindly agreed to speak on the post-war schools. To mark the 90th anniversary if anyone would like to bring photos or other memorabilia to the reunion for others to look at, it would be much appreciated. Theo Welch
JOSEPHINE HOUGHTON writes:
In proof reading our magazine once more I have found your news very interesting -although there are many people whom I neither know or have heard of - left Chefp in 1936 just before I arrived in this world. I also know many people by name whom my...”

“...Robertson would come up to see us. We used to go out into the garden and on to the hockey pitch, or if the weather wasn’t too good we would go into the school room. I remember how we would pass round our letters from home. We used to bring each other sweets, and once he brought some lumps of what we would now call coffee sugar, which we crunched up and was a great treat. We would walk home from church together too. William joined us the following year, to make us now four at the schools.
During that summer the schools were 50 years old, and we had very exciting jubilee celebrations. I read in the magazine how difficult it is to celebrate an event like this, when there are no old boys, no old boys’ dinners, or old girls' reunions. However they did try to make it meaningful for us. We had a very exciting picnic to Lighthouse Island. A large launch was hired, and the American Ship U.S.S. Blackhawk put two pinnaces at our disposal. Both the British and American navies kindly lent us craft, and...”

“...Coming for a SPOT, staying longer?
Heather came to us on the SPOT programme. She has taken over the vacancy left by Heather Mack's need to return home at the beginning of term, and is applying for a work permit. She writes:
“Hello, my name is Heather Baird and I come from Bangor in Northern Ireland.
At home I was a Primary School teacher doing relief teaching in various schools in the Belfast area. I graduated from University in 1996 and in my final year I began to think seriously about my future. I knew that God had wanted me to train as a teacher but at that time I did not feel that settling down into a permanent teaching job in Northern Ireland was the right thing for me.
From the age of 16 I had been very interested in mission and had read many missionary stories. I had also attended the Worldwide Missionary Convention which is held in the town where I live and had heard of the need various Missionary Organisations had for teachers. As I prayed about my future I began to feel that God...”

“...it is for the older students . Subjects considered are, Saying No to Peer Pressure; Aids, cancer and facing death; Sexual abuse; growing up; Preparing for society in Home Countries; Relationships, fashion, diet, sports, Etc.; and Drugs and Alcohol.

More Schools There are many International Schools in Asia serving the growing international population within S. E. Asia. Thus parents are naturally considering more convenient options for their children. Pray for the continued correct response to meet the needs of the international students and thereby make Chefoo a very desirable option. We really need more students to make for more efficient use of the facilities here, as well as make the school more economically viable.
HalfTerm Last Half Term was done on a Scottish theme...”

“...from Chowtsun, Shandong (Zhou Cun) on the German-built Railway, (connecting Jinan to Qingdao) to work in Sianfu (Xi-an) Capital of Shensi and I was removed from Chefoo to continue education in Xi-an in an American school. After a brief education there, my parents went on furlough via Canada, USA and eventually to Britain. Consequently I had six months of school in California, six more months in New Jersey and continued my education by attending two more schools in Wales before landing in Eltham College (S.E. London) from 1922-28.Total schools = Seven!
RUTH (DRAPER) HANSFORD (1974-81) I started a new job as a Clinical Biochemist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London in January. My husband and I have just bought a 3 bed semi-detached house in South London and are now sharing it with 3 cats, one of whom is pregnant (and who has adopted us since we moved here!). My brother, RALPH DRAPER, got married in January in Australia to Julie (an Australian) but is still living and working...”
