“...have managed to retain the atmosphere and glamour of the Far-East.
A magnificent bridge connects Chefoo and the Bluff, and over it run "modern rickshas" and "sedan-chairs", which however, are propel led by machinery, and not by man-strength.
The largest air-drome is situated on the soldiers' drillground across from the East Fort, which has been changed into a vast stadium, seating over a thousand people. From this stadium people have a wonderful view, when the boys and girls from the C.I.M. Schools exhibit their prowess in flying, on the traditional Exhibition Days.
The business section of Chefoo extends from second to fourth beach, and the large office-buildings such as McMullan & Co. and each departmental store, have a landing-field for aeroplanes, on the roof.
A rai Iway, which was laid behind the hi I Is, connects Chefoo with Weihaiwei and all the northern cities. The hills are no longer bare and rugged, for a lovely residential section has come into being and extends far up their sides...”

“...think I knew by the age of twelve that I was meant to be a teacher; and by the time that I was 16 or 17, I felt sure that I was meant to teach at Chefoo. I felt that I had had all the benefits of a missionary upbringing without any of its attendant hardships, living in a foreign land, often separated from parents and grandparents, perhaps suffering an inferior or interrupted schooling, exposure to disease and danger. Instead of a I I that I had a happy upbringing and schooling at several good schools and a chance to get to Oxford. So I became sure that I was bound to give to other children of the Mission all I could of the good things which I had had. There was a time when I told my father that I wanted to do what God wanted, but I did not want to go to China. Father of course said that there was no need for me to think that China was the only place; and I grew past that aversion and later found it no struggle but a natural thing to look forward to going to the land of my birth. TORONTO BRANCH DINNER
— Saturday —
(February 22, 1986)
The Chefoo Schools Association, Toronto Branch, met at China House on February 22, 1986, at 12:30 p.m. The weather was favourable, and there was a record attendance of some ,40. Those in charge were most instructive in giving out name tags, receiving our dinner price and collecting our membership fees. A great deal of time is taken organizing and planning this annual affair in order to help it run smoothly. The folks in the cloakroom also deserve recognition - we appreciate the work of all these individuals. Fixing...”
