Pat, as he was known at school, was always a leader. A good scholar and a good athlete, he got along easily with everyone, aided by his mop of red hair and infectious Irish grin. His years in Chefoo taught him perseverance and how to study, which he later put to such good use. He enrolled at the University of Toronto, taking a law course. The writer met him again in 1924 when I came to Toronto. Al, as he was now called, introduced me, along with Harold Warren, Ken Evans and others to the boarding house where we established "The Bachelors' Rest" in the rooms on the top floor. Al taught a Sunday School Class at Olivet Congregational Church where we were invited to attend. Harold and I later became teachers there. In the summer recesses he preached at country churches or counselled at youth camps. Upon graduating in Law from...”
