“...us to give a hand with the boat which was being bashed against the Rock in the rising sea. Waiting our chance we jumped into the boat as it rose on the crest of a wave and grabbing oars, we helped to fend the boat off. When we were all aboard we sat on the thwarts and commenced to row back to the small beach to pick up Mrs. Whitelaw and the small child, whom we found waiting at the water's edge. We then headed back to Chefoo. Rowing was a lot easier than when outward bound as now we had a rising North Blow and the seas astern of us, and we made good time back to the Chefoo beach. It was the end of summer. 3....”

“...WEIHSIEN 1983 Mary Taylor Previte - (Chefoo: 1939-1945) (Great Grand-daughter of Hudson Taylor) 351, Kings Highway East, Haddenfield, N.J. 08033) They were spilling from the guts of this low-flying plane, dangling from the parachutes looking like giant silk poppies, dropping into the fields outside the concentration camp. The Americans had come. The memory is still so vivid: The unfamiliar drone of a plane raping the August heat wave midway between morning and evening rollcall. I dashed to the window in time to see the American red, white, and blue emblazoned on its vulnerable belly. They had come. The Americans had come'. It was August 1945. "Weihsien Civilian Assembly Center", the Japanese called our concentration camp in China. I was 12. For three years, my brothers and sister and I had been captives of the Japanese, separated by warring armies from our missionary parents for 5% years. And now the Americans were falling from the skies. I raced for the forbidden gates, now awash with...”

“...Americans, we found the camp hospital that had been our home at Weihsien for most of two years. My eyes blurred as I looked up to the window where I had watched the Americans parachuting into the fields beyond the wall, and I saw myself, a little girl running barefooted with a crowd of 1,400 prisoners towards seven young American soldiers. My daughter Alice buried her face in my shoulder and her tears felt warm on my neck as I held her. "It's like the end of a story." she whispered. I understood. Chefoo in 1984 Writing on'Chefoo Guest House' stationery in mid-May, Faith Ledgard sends us this report "Greet the school in whose honour we sing Whose fame is our trust and our care...... Daughters and sons in loyalty knit Plight we our troth to thee." The train from Qingdao pulled in to Yantai railway station in midafternoon on the 14th. May, 1984. Our modern coach hooted its way through crowds of bicycles and people along what used to be 'Yi Ma Lu' , or '.Mule Road' to give us our first view over...”

“...went both old and young greeted us with smiles, waves, and 'Ni how ma?'. On the first day we visited Temple Hill and were permitted to wander freely around, finding homes of the past and places where internees spent many months after leaving the C.I.M. Compound, before being interned in Weihsien. At the Yantai Tapestry factory the most popular embroidered tapestry was of course the view of Settlement Hill, the Chefoo Club(now a guest house) and the harbour. This factory has grown directly from the 'China Crafts' business commenced by the McMullan and Rouse families. The city of Chefoo has grown tremendously over the last few years. Shantung is the third most densely populated province in China. The railway square is impressive with its buildings and landscaped gardens. The streets are so much wider with two footpaths, two bicycle tracks and the centre of the road for vehicles. Trees line most roads and where derelict houses were still to be seen it was only an indication that they were soon...”

“...were still covered with oyster shells, barnacles and periwinkles, anenomes were still in the pools. How we loved to go from pool to pool! At last we rounded the point and sat down to search for cats' eyes. Alas! we found none, probably because dozens of men, women and children gathered and took away anything edible there. Nevertheless we had relived a few days from our book of memories and felt our return to Chefoo had been complete. "School that we love, to thee we owe More than mere words can ever show. “...Everything was very relaxed and low-key and the thirty Japanese visitors(including the Mayor and the Postmaster)were invited to make themselves at home. Bill(Area Director O.M.F. Japan & Korea) gave a brief history of OMF and Chefoo, recounting incidents of the Lord's goodness and provision over the years. But more telling than any words was the testimony of the children themselves - their bright faces and beautiful singing, their exuberance and obvious sense of trust and security. Perhaps the most memorable scene of all was that of 7 year old Mirai Byun (son of Korean OMF missionaries to Japan) taking the dignified-looking Mayor by the hand to show him all around the school. The Mayor seemed to be enjoying himself immensely! "A little child shall lead them". Chefoo School Malaysia has appreciated the help of ex- Chefusian children up on holiday with their parents. Derek and Norman Buntrock half cut up logs for the planned adventure playground, and David Dykema put up a 10 kmph. sign down...”

He returns to Canberra next year. We shall then visit Hong Kong where my early memories are centred. During our 10 weeks in the United Kingdom we hope to meet some of those who remember my mother(Jessie Alice Stevens) and her parents who spent over 50 years in China. Lilian Fletcher - Chefoo Staff 1933-37. (23 Ronald Ave. Frankston, Vic.3199). Ever since those years I spent on the school and hospital staff I have had a special interest in Chefoo, and enjoy attending the Chefoo Reunions, and the appetizing Chinese meals. After leaving Chefoo the next 14 years were spent in different inland provinces, including Japanese Internment Camp in Shanghai, with the last 2 years under the communist regime in West Szechuan. Alvyn's book, a comprehensive history of Canadian missionaries of all societies in China from those early days until 1950, is to come out shortly under the title of 'Saving China' or 'Journeying Mercies'.
