“...entire Chefoo school, had been interned by the Japanese for two years during WW II. Eric Liddell, the "Chariots of Fire" hero, died in that camp. The western half of the camp which was originally a Presbyterian mission school (Le Dao Yuan) is now the Second Middle School, while the eastern section has become part of an expanded District Hospital. Principal Yueh welcomed us graciously, serving tea, sweets and fruit before recounting the history of the school. With no little pride he acknowledged that six of his predecessors had been American. He knew that the school had served as a concentration camp during WW II but was surprised to learn that the current US Ambassador to Beijing, Mr. Arthur Hummel had been an internee, in fact one who had escaped. Principal Yueh requested us to send him further historical information that would supplement their knowledge of Le Dao Yuan. He then most kindly took us on a personally guided tour of the school and hospital. We saw Block 23 where as Chefoo students...”

“...the train brought us to Chefoo (Yantai) where Jim, Mary, John and Kathleen (who went to be with the Lord in 1952) had all studied. Being on our own we hired motorized three wheel cabs and went immediately to the Overseas Chinese Hotel. It was full, but after a brief delay and with the extremely understanding help of Comrade Gao of Foreign Affairs, we were given ideal accommodations in the nearby Yantai Bin Guan adjacent to the old Chefoo Club at the foot of Consular Hill. How can one describe that moment of intense emotion as standing once again on the bund Jim saw again scenes so precious to his childhood and listened again to the sound of waves lapping "on the shores of an eastern sea". Today the entire Chefoo school campus and several miles of the beach area east is a naval base with restricted access. Later in the day as we stood near the main entrance we spotted the Prep School, Memorial Hall and the Co-ed Building. It was November 1942 when the entire Chefoo school, teachers and students...”

“...dear to Him in China, assured that He in turn would care for the four children so dear to them. As we thought of the marvelous growth of the church in China, we began to understand more of God's sovereign purposes and unfailing faithfulness. On Sunday, after attending worship in the only open church in Chefoo, the former Church of Christ of China on Sheng Li Road, we walked on to Temple Hill. There we found the old Presbyterian Mission Hospital where, in 1939, Mary had passed so near death's door with a ruptured appendix. Prayer had made the difference. Not far away we passed two of the former missionary residences (now occupied by the military) that were used to house some of the Chefoo school children during our first ten months in concentration camp. Jim recalled how, at the sound of the gong, he and his classmates lined up in front of one of those residences for roll call each morning and numbered off in Japanese. The lovely Yu Huang Ding park at the top of Temple Hill had obviously...”

“...vzere singing in the acacia trees. With many new factories and industries burning coal, air pollution is a growing problem. Through the haze we could see the Pinnacle, Castle Rock, Eve's Nob, Adam's Nob and the pass where Ninghai Gate once stood. Way down the beach was Cathay Hotel, now part of the naval complex, and Bottle Rock. Out across the water was Lighthouse Island, and then the Bluff and sand spit linking to the new harbor area. Our next stop after Chefoo was Xian in the northwest Province of Shaanxi. This was the area Jim's parents left to serve in during WW II. Flying into the Xian airport, Jim, Mary and John recounted how they had flown there in a US airforce plane after their release from Weihsien concentration camp. That first night of freedom and the hospitality of the GIs was still a vivid memory. The following day a Chinese friend had taken them on by train and trek to Fengxiang where 5 1/2 long years of separation had ended in an unforgettable reunion with their parents...”

“...with the present in God's sovereign designs. James H. Taylor III, (Chefoo-1936-45). News from Chefoo Schools and OMF Hostels in East Asia Chefoo, Malaysia has been the scene of much outdoor activity for the last few months as the soil subsidence problem has been tackled by a variety of mechanical equipment and lots of muscle power. Writing at the beginning of November, Mr. Stuart Melton, the headmaster, said they expected all the work to be finished by the end of November. Added to this problem was a recent landslide which threatened the teachers' house so that it had to be evacuated. It is hoped that another house will be built elsewhere on the premises. In the midst of the heaps of clay and mud the School celebrated 'Half-Term' with 'Rainbow Week', each day representing one rainbow colour in, as much as possible, raiment worn, and even in food prepared. There were all sorts of 'fun and games', contests and races. From Chefoo, Nanae, Japan Miss Judy Spear, one of the teachers, wrote to thank...”

“...you to Rev. Joseph Liversldge and welcome to Norman Cliff. Joseph Liversidge has done so much for the Association since he took over the chairmanship about ten years ago. It must have been some effort to come to Tunbridge Wells for the Committee meetings and other occasions but we always found Joe gracious and unhurried and ready to listen to all aspects before asking for a decision. At Reunions he and his wife Betty were always evident and ready to welcome us as we came. However, as they have moved further away from London and have no reason to come as far south, Joe has felt it wise to relinquish the 'post.' Thank you, Joe, for all you have done for our Association. We welcome Norman Cliff as the new Chairman of the Great Britain branch. We know that he is very interested in all who have connections with Chefoo and look forward to being able to share his interest and enthusiasm. “...it got dark, the coloured fountain, a fireworks display, and finally a concert. Among the ex-Weihsien T.G.S. students I met at this reunion were Gavin Chapman from Australia, Desmond Power from Vancouver (high up in the computer world), and Hazel (Sawyer) Booth (at Chefoo 1934-37). While in Victoria I also saw Barbara (Lester) McCall and Joy (Kirk) Cooper. The following Monday I took the ferry back to Vancouver where I enjoyed a week staying with my Aunt Jennie (widow of my uncle, Miles Broomhall) and her friend Joan Pugh in their luxurious flat. They really did look after me superbly. Aunt Jennie will never forget that when she came as a widow to Canada with 3 little boys Aunt Marge visited her and helped get them settled. She spoke with great affection of our Granny, her mother-in-law, and of how considerate she was. While in Vancouver I spent an evening with Donald Fletcher and his family, having not seem him since 1941. He is a Chartered Accountant within a few years of retiring. He...”

I especially enjoyed the article by Bruce Clinton, who was a contemporary. I enclose a copy of an article by my sister-in-law, Alice, (Mrs. James Taylor, Sr.) in the September issue of the Guide Posts magazine (entitled, 'China, World War II - a Mother cut off from her own youngsters'). Personally, my wife, 2 children and I were in-temed by the Japanese in Shanghai for 3 1/2 years. At the end of the War we learned that Father, (Mr. Herbert Taylor) had been flown...”
