“...Constance(Knight)Amos - Chefoo 1911-21 passed away suddenly following emergency surgery on April 19, 1980. After leaving Chefoo Con. attended Teachers' College and Toronto Bible College. For 3,1/2 years she served as Secretary for the Y.W.C.A. on Pembroke St., in Toronto, before going to China under the C.I.M. in 1932. She was on the Staff of the Prep. School in Chefoo until Nov. 1936, when she married Rev. Norman Amos of the C.I.M. After the winter holidays in Chefoo with Norman's children Paul and Helen, they went west 1 to Szechuan province where they served until furlough in 1941. Remaining in Australia Con's husband held several pastorates in Victoria and in Tas~ania. In these various churches Con. st:od
whole heartedly with her husband in the Gospel ministry and endeared herself to many in the church circle and beyond, as well as maintaining her love for Overseas missions, especially the 0.M.F.—C.I.M. Her funeral service was an occasion of Christian thanksgiving, triumph and hope...”

“...Martha(Maud)Elizabeth Brock, n^e Gordon spent 1916-1939 in China, for the first 2^ years on the staff of the Chefoo preparatory school. Gordon & Stan Conway were both taught for a time by her, and were able to attend her funeral service 18th Sept. 1980. From Chefoo, Miss Gordon moved to Anhwei province for language study and children's work. Then in 1921 she married the Rev.John Brock and this necessitated another move into Honan, and to the important river port of Chowkiakow, where she was engaged in children's and women's work, besides offering gracious hospitality to all missionaries who passed through that city. Such kindness meant much, when I, as a new bride(Mrs Gordon Conway) first met her. During the years there brigands and robbers caused concern, but Mr & Mrs Brock's faith and perseverance held firm, so that they were loved and esteemed by the Chinese men and women as wise and sympathetic counsellors, as quoted in a China's Millions magazine of that period. Mr. Brock died in 1942...”

“...Edith Coulthard - Chefoo 1897-1907-Edith, a grand-daughter of Hudson Taylor, the founder of the Chefoo Schools, attended the original Prep. School, at Tongshin, the other side of the Chinese City. After finishing at the Girls' School, she went to Oxford University in the days when they did not confer degrees on women, but returned in 1924 and received her M.A. Her subject was Geography and after teaching at High Schools for Girls she was appointed Lecturer in Geography and Tutor in the Department of Education at Manchester University. She became Vice-Chairman of the Geographical Association, and wrote several learned articles ant cooks in tne field of Geography. She was a Presbyterian and one of the best elders they had. The church where she attended held a special Memorial Service for her on Oct.12th. Edith reached her 90th birthday on June 12, and had all the fun and excitement -100 cards, boxes and boxes of flowers, a special lunch at the University of Manchester and a family party put...”

“...Broomhall said, 'Aide has always been a helper. Many will miss her'.
Catherine Graham - Katie Graham's parents were C.I.M. missionaries in Yunnan so she went to Chefoo as a small child and left school during the First World War. In England she trained as a nurse at St. Thomas's Hospital in London and then nursed in Malta for a few years. Returning to England, she joined the Ranyard Mission, a Christian Nursing Association for nursing the poor in London until District Nursing became the prerogative of the Health Services. On retiring from active nursing in 1958 she joined her friend, Mrs Edith Cooper in Worthing, Sussex where, amongst other activities she ran a C.I.M.-0.M.F. Prayer Meeting in the town. She died peacefully on Sunday May 18th 1980.
Helen Smith - Chefoo 1924-1930 who will be remembered as an outstanding student at Chefoo and then taught school in England, died on May 13, 1980 after many years of suffering. About 10 days before her death she had a mild stroke, but was improving...”

SYDNEY CHEFOO REUNION - 7th AUG. 1980
Chefusians don't really need an excuse to meet and talk over old times, but the Sydney-siders had ample reason last August to gather, because two were coming home on furlough and one from Western Australia was passing through Sydney. We met in the home where David Hayman and his family are staying whilst on furlough. (Address: 26 Glenview St., Gordon, N.S.W. 2072) With 26 tongues and 26 pairs of chopsticks all working together it was a busy, noisy and happy evening. David and Roslyn Hayman were home on furlough from Japan, Jean Gardiner just retired from her work in Papua, New Guinea, with the Leprosy

“...Mission and Christopher Fairclough returning home with a friend from the Baptist World Alliance Congress in Toronto, Canada, all made it a special Reunion. It was great to have representatives from the more recent Chefoo schools with us too - some of them are living in the O.M.F. "Mira-booka" home for missionaries' children in Sydney. We really felt that there were more Chefusians there than had enjoyed the Chow, who had come from all over the world, for the July Chefoo magazines had just arrived and were distributed that evening. We felt we were meeting friends from near and far as we read news of their activities. Those present 'in the flesh' were:-David & Roslyn Hayman, Peter, Donald, Douglas and Jonathan Hayman, Ridley & Florence Smith, Jocelyn(Budge)Gray & her husband and son, Margaret & Lynette Byrne, Theo & Joyce Hayman, Andrew & Barbara Hayman, Jack & Billie Palmer, Cath. (Warren)Graham, Christopher Fairclough & friend, Jean Gardiner, Jim Cunningham, Faith Ledgard & friend. Faith...”

Mrs J. Hills Cotterill writes from 10 Knoll Road, Sidcup, Kent DA14 4QU in September 1980. Just some news from the Cotterill family. I wonder if any of the "real Chefoo" staff and boys and girls remember me, either from the schoo1-by-the-sea or from Weihsien Camp. We still live near London and would warmly welcome a phone call or a visit from Old Chefusians visiting the U.K. I read the news avidly, especially when I recognize former pupils under their married names and clad in so much academic or missionary achievement. We are planning to leave the London area within the next 18 months we hope, but as yet are awaiting some movement of the "pillar of cloud or fire" to indicate just where to establish what must be our final home. I retired from full-time professional work some years ago. Joe officially did the same...”

“...4HG) writes us "Elsa Van Buskirk's 'Do you remember’- about Len Goold's fall (see July 1980 'Chefoo') reminded me of one of mother's (Katie Parry, nde Easton) favourite stories of her time when she was on the staff of the Prep. School. She was on duty on the fateful day when Len fell and she told us, (on many occasions!) what he said. Len with his face all bloody, smiled through his tears and said, "When I grow up and people look at the scar on my face will they ask me, "Was it Mons or the Marne"?
Irene Rouse, 28 Chester Ave., Toronto M4K 2Z9 - was over in Britain again
in 1980 and had a wonderful time in Sweden and Switzerland in September. On her arrival at Gatwick Airport on the 28th of June she rented a car and drove up to Maxwell House, Warlingham, in time for the Chefoo Reunion arranged there. This year there was an especially large contingent of young folk who had attended the various Chefoo Schools.

“...Barbara Tootill, Brenda Scott and Sharon Meadows , and they had a good share in organizing the Reunion. After meeting various folk whom she hadn't seen for several years groups sat around eating lunch(Bea and Dorothy Stark had taken Irene's) with tea or coffee provided by Maxwell House. Again there was a chance for chatting outside on the lawn. Then a number of the young folk had brought with them slides of their time at Chefoo and these were shown on the screen to cries of "there's so & so" and "Ooh, look at you", and so on!
Later Mr. Miller, ex-headmaster of Malaysian Chefoo, showed slides with accompanying tape of that school, and after a brief word from him, and the singing of "Lord of All Power and Might" the Reunion closed - but still the chatting went on. Now Maxwell House has been sold and a new "Maxwell House" will house the OMFers at Sevenoaks where the Headquarters of the OMF is now located. Irene also mentions visiting Clarendon School, where the Head Girl is a Chefooite, Rachel...”
