“...heavenly rest, after celebrating our Golden Wedding." (Readers may remember the account he gave of the wedding of H.R.H. Princess Anne in Westminster Abbey in our issue of July 1974, to which he and Mrs. Lutley had been invited by Her Majesty the Queen. Ed.) THORNTON WILDER, one of Chefoo’s most distinguished sons, died in Hamden, Conn, on December 7th, 1975. He attended Chefoo in the years 1911 and 1912, while his father was U.S. Consul General in Shanghai, and was a loyal member of the Chefoo Schools Association. (See. p.46 of the July 1975 Chefoo magazine). In 1915 he entered Oberlin College, Ohio, and aLready he was writing one-act plays for his sisters to act in. Two years later he transferred to Yale, had a year in the Coast Artillery in World War I and took his degree in 1920. At Yale he continued his omnivorous reading, wrote for The Lit, turned out plays, and came under the influence of Professor William Lyons Phelps, the distinguished teacher. Said the professor of his student, ’I...”

“...London W7 News Editor: Mrs. Elva M. Nicholson (n^e Cook) 16 Newlands Rd. Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 9AT Secretary for Mrs. Edith Staines (n£e Bruce) Great Britain 39 Wilman Road Branch: Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN 4 9AL CHRIS STARK of 19 Lingfield Rd., Gravesend, Kent DA12 5AH who left Chefoo in 1927, sends us yet another Chefoo reminiscence. "One hot sunny morning during the summer holidays, in 1926, JACK POTE-HUNT and I decided to go for a picnic on our own to the Waterfall, about 3 miles from the Schools. Having obtained the Master-on-Duty’s permission, we collected a large loaf of bread and some peanut-butter from the house-keeper, together with a tin of fruit owned by Jack, out of his ’tuck’ cupboard, and set off up the highway and through the Ninghai gate. On arriving at our destination we made short work of the bread and peanut butter, and feeling thirsty we decided to open the tin of fruit only to find we did not have a tin opener. It was noon by now and extremely hot, so we moved into the...”

“...California 91010) We moved into the Retirement Home for Presbyterian Foreign Missionaries in February 1975. We have a lovely apartment, are most comfortable, and love it. All of the residents here are Presbyterian foreign missionaries who have served in all parts of the world. It is a blessed community of people who have spent their lives serving Christ by helping others. Now in retirement they are serving Christ by helping each other. It is beautiful. Am including an extra donation for the Chefoo Schools. SYDNEY BEST c.1916-1925 (550 So. Hope St., Los Angeles, Ca. 90017) DAVID HARRIS sent us the missionary bulletin of July 12, 1975, from the Church of the Open Door which has this news of SYDNEY BEST. "After 37 years of missionary service in both China and Japan, Sydney and Dorothy Best are retiring from mission work overseas to serve on the pastoral staff of Church of the Open Door, and Rev. Best will begin his duties in the Missions Department in August. ..We welcome them to the work and know...”

“...wilderness. I do not see the way out. Yet for me life has been interesting and worthwhile in spite of all the malice and stupidity of so many. DAVID FIDDLER 1910-1918 (3825 Hampton St., Tucson, Arizona 85716) ...I'm doing O.K., reaching the age of 71 this year .. born in Liangchow, N. China. There were 4 of us brothers, 3 of us still living (and all active members of the C.S.A., as from this year. Ed.). I have 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grand child. I wish all of the group of the Chefoo Schools Association lots of luck, and keep up the good work.. I don't know any addresses of former Chefooites, would be glad to know of some. (Now, David's contemporaries get busy and drpp him a line! Ed.) DR. EDWARD GLAZIER 1937-42 (c/o Spencer Lake Bible Camp, Rt. 2, Waupaco, Wis. 54981) "I have fond memories of my days in Chefoo, 1937-1942. After studies in the States, including medical school, my wife and I went to the Philippines under O.M.F. till 1963. 20....”

“...Rickey here in Lake Jackson drove me up to spend some time with them ... a lovely experience seeing that part of the country between here and there, and better still seeing children and grandchildren again. Texas is too far to go north often, but am getting my feet on the ground again ... I was treated royally. .. We all go in different directions, but those years in Chefoo will never be forgotten - they were a good foundation for life.. I hope my father’s manuscript of the beginnings of the Schools in Chefoo, which I had Xeroxed and of which JOE DUNLAP has a copy, can be included in the Centennial book on Chefoo (being compiled by Mrs. John (Sheila) Miller who is now at Chefoo School, Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, Peninsular Malaysia - Ed.) . ROBERT LOCKHART 1958-64 (66 Blackacres Blvd., London, Ontario, Canada N6G 2G6) My sister MARGARET has just finished teaching for 3 years at Chefoo in Malaysia and is now back in Edmonton and teaching there (Address: #301 - 711180th Ave., Edmonton...”
