“...ROBERT 0. LOOSLEY, who attended the Chefoo School in the period 1912-1920 died in Connecticut on December 8, 1975, after being hospitalised nearly two years as a result of a car accident. Shortly before this he had had a trip to England, and of special interest to him was a visit to 'Loosley Country' in the Chilterns, 'Loosley Row' being an incorporated village on the crown of a hill with a view of Oxford University in the far distance. 'Loosley House', located on this ridge, which has 13 chimneys and 6-7 ft. thick walls, was sold out of the Loosley family in the 1880's. He wrote his sister Mrs. DOROTHY KAMBESTAD (1965 Chanticleer Ave., Apt. 2, Santa Cruz, Ca 95052) of this trip and sent her postcards "which reminded me", says Dorothy, "of the British history we had to swat for exams". Robert himself had his interest in Chefoo sparked 5-6 years ago by reading in a Chefoo magazine of some of his school contemporaries. One of his most affectionate memories was of MISS UNWIN, on the Prep....”

“...ALBERT F. LUTLEY, (writes his widow - 21 Sedley Taylor Rd., Cambridge CP2 2PN) began life at the Chefoo School when he was 5 1/2 years old and stayed until he was 11. In the year 1910 he loved school so much he never told anyone he had dysentery, until found by Mr. McCarthy in the School Library so ill it took 3 months for Mrs. McCarthy's careful nursing to pull him through. Chefoo meant so much to him that he was thrilled when in 1927 we were evacuated there with our month-old baby boy, in time for us to see PERCY MOORE win the shield (on B.S. Sports Day). We spent two years in Chefoo, such happy summers, when my husband became Captain of the Port Cricket team and hit 171 not out. Then in 1935 we came back again to Chefoo to see my husband's parents who had retired there, and he was asked by Bp. Scott to be Port Chaplain. It was a time of joy and sorrow, for we lost our first boy, little Jamie in the Prep. School on his 8th birthday. A second boy John was baptised by Bp. Scott on his next...”

“...Margaret (born in Chefoo in 1936) head of a school in Chile. After 18 years in Wiltshire my husband’s health broke down and we had to retire to Cambridge. Cambridge had been the second love of his life; after 9 years at Dean Close School in Cheltenham he went to St. John’s College, Cambridge, and then to Princeton Theological Seminary. After receiving his Th.M. there, he was ordained in Lambeth Palace Chapel by the Rt. Rev. Cosmo Lang in February 1930, to the work in Szechuan, West China. From 1966 he spent 9 happy years in Cambridge, helping students of Chinese to do their course. Now he has gone to his heavenly rest, after celebrating our Golden Wedding." (Readers may remember the account he gave of the wedding of H.R.H. Princess Anne in Westminster Abbey in our issue of July 1974, to which he and Mrs. Lutley had been invited by Her Majesty the Queen. Ed.) THORNTON WILDER, one of Chefoo’s most distinguished sons, died in Hamden, Conn, on December 7th, 1975. He attended Chefoo in the years...”

“...prominent in educational circles, author, historian, and traveller in China in this ’post revolutionary liberation' period, who said she'd very much like to meet other ex-students from Chefoo to find out about the pre-revolutionary days. She'd been to China several times - and as recently as last year - to Tsingtao, Nanking, Peking, but not to West China. She'd read about C.I.M. missionaries in Marshall Broomhall's book 'By Love Compelled' and showed great interest in work among the Lisu and tribes people. It was a most interesting evening. The conversation ranged around bound feet, baby towers, piracy, sedan chair and wheelbarrow transport, rapids, attitude of Chinese people to ourselves, Oxford examinations, how often we saw our parents, Weihsien internment, the Boxer rebellion, non-missionaries children at Chefoo, visits of the British Naval vessels, Lighthouse Island picnics, Second Beach, etc. The Memories session' was preceded by a magnificent Chinese meal, consisting of some 10 different...”

He left Chefoo in 1929. He is a Baptist Minister lecturing temporarily at Victoria Baptist Bible College. He showed me photos of Chefoo Prize Giving in the Memorial Hall. ALISON (PIKE) BUTLER writes in October 1975 from ’Cherith’, 14 Grange Rd., Kew, Victoria. "Mrs. Sheila Miller asked me to do the donkey work for the Australian Chefusians for the new book and it has been very interesting trying to find out names and addresses of those who have been at Chefoo and making contact with them. CONNIE (WEBSTER) CORDEN has been most helpful and she suggested I write up the news I’ve received in this way for the next Chefoo magazine. I rang PETER ROBINSON and he was in hearty agreement ... I find that HELEN (AMOS) DAILEY died 2 years ago in Victoria, and WINIFRED (LACK) HUMPHRIES this year in Western Australia. While...”

“...attends OMF Men's teas and expressed his desire to have a Chefoo Reunion. Robert kept in touch with a McCarthy (Tim? or Ray?) for some years, but has now lost track of him. Harold Eaton thought DUNCAN McKIE had retired from school teaching. GRAHAM McKie has retired and is living with a doctor son at Maryborough, Vic. Our MARGIE taught with one of Duncan McKie's sons at the Penola High School. She also has come across folks who remember one of the TRUDINGERS (was it LYNDALL?) when she taught down that way years ago. Jean Lyons reported that her brother DIXON (formerly known as RUFUS) had been very ill in South Australia. My brother WALLY PIKE retired last week from the clinic where he was pharmacist. Neither he nor his wife enjoy good health. I hope retirement sets him up in health! We did enjoy having Lilian Fletcher looking after us here during RUTH METCALF's absence in U.K. and Thailand on long service leave. We all enjoyed the slides Lilian showed of Cornford House. Ruth helped there...”

"One hot sunny morning during the summer holidays, in 1926, JACK POTE-HUNT and I decided to go for a picnic on our own to the Waterfall, about 3 miles from the Schools. Having obtained the Master-on-Duty’s permission, we collected a large loaf of bread and some peanut-butter from the house-keeper, together with a tin of fruit owned by Jack, out of his ’tuck’ cupboard, and set off up the highway and through the Ninghai gate. “...service on September 11th and expects to be appointed "Team Vicar" within the next three years. We wish them every happiness and great blessing at "Holy Trinity". Many old Chefusians have had associations with Clarendon School, first in Malvern, Worcestershire and since shortly after World War 2 in Abergele, North Wales so will be very interested to hear that there was a major fire at the School recently. David Highwood (at one time house parent at the Chefoo School at Nanae, Japan) writes in the recent O.M.F. Home Director's letter: "As the girls finished lunch on the 29th September the fire alarm sounded. Just another practice? This time a real fire smoldering in a staff bedroom had spread to the roof and Clarendon was ablaze. For fifteen hours one hundred firemen fought to save the school. Mercifully it was daytime and no one was hurt. The fire was contained on the top floor where staffrooms and dormitories were destroyed but the library was gutted and hundreds of tons of water damaged...”

“...before the turn of the century, and there were fourteen staff to link the generations. I had not seen two of the people, resident normally in other countries, since Chefoo days. Then we went over to Cornford House in Pembury (3 miles away) for tea and were joined by fourteen more old Chefusians plus all the elderly residents. Several of these, including my mother, are parents of Chefusians. What a wonderful place to retire, looking over a quiet Kent valley, being lovingly cared for. Both MARGARET WELLER who is in charge and JEAN PEARCE, the caterer, are old Chefusians. After tea we sang some old Chefoo songs and listened to Dr. BOB PARRY reminiscing and giving a short message I wish even more of you could have been there. GRACE LIVERSIDGE Those who came included the following: (the dates given in brackets indicate the years at Chefoo) MR. and MRS. BAZIRE (1935-45), Rev. T Benson (China 1930-47), Miss E. M. “...ANDREWS 1933-1936 (Apdo 22067, Mexico 22, D.F. Mexico) writes: LILY ORR visited Mexico in June 1974 and we spent several pleasant days together. She went on to Central America before returning to Philadelphia. "In early June of this year I came to the U.S. for a furlough of a few months. The first week-end in June I attended the 35th Reunion of my college class at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa. There, among many more classmates, I met VAUGHN (DICKSON) EARLY, another member of 'the Quintet' (Chefoo 1936). She looked very natural even though I had not seen her since graduation. Presently (July 1975) I am visiting Dad and Mother in Lancaster, Pa. Mother is a resident at 'Lammermuir House' while Dad has been in a nursing home nearby since March of 1973. Mother is doing well considering her 95 years .. is very much 'all here' mentally, and goes to see Dad every day possible. Dad spends most of his time sitting in an easy chair .. He recognises members of his family.. When he prays it is apparent...”

“...FRANCES (WIGHT) COOK 1906-1916 (9 Graham St., Grahamstown, E.C.P., Republic of South Africa) The Chefoo mag. was forwarded to me from 8380 San Capistrano Way, Buena Park, California. I came here in June at the cordial invitation of my son CALVIN WIGHT COOK. He was inducted as moderator of the Presbyterian Church of South Africa September 21st, 1975. He received his ring from last year’s moderator (a black) at General Assembly in Bloomfontein. It was a mixed assembly of blacks, coloureds and whites and very moving. Our granddaughter is to be married in January D.V. CALVIN left Chefoo In 1941. He is now a professor at Rhodes University. I spent November at Port Alfred and found the port medical officer was also at Chefoo - Dr. JO MacRAE. He did not finish at Chefoo. Came from Korea or Manchuria, I believe. I am looking forward to our great reunion, when Jesus receives ’His own'. Surely it will not be long. God bless you. Love' JOSEPH R. COOKE 1933-1943 (8178 23rd Ave. N.E., Seattle, Wash...”

“...He and his wife Miriam stayed with us a number of times before moving here. We see each other more often now. JOHN T. CROFTS 1909-1916 (9520 S. Hamilton, Chicago, II. 60643) "Chefoo does seem far away and long ago. Most of us have formed many new ties and acquired many new interests since we hunted for 'cat's eyes' at the Second Beach, ate 'bread and scrape' and walked home in long alligator lines from the Union Church. Now that world is 'one with Nineveh and Tyre', scarcely remembered save by a handful of us old-timers, - a lingering outpost of mid-Victorian culture, Chefoo afforded not a few fine and pleasant memories to offset the shock when we were tumbled out into the hirlyburly of the new age. And now, as our frantic century passes into its last quarter, a covey of greedy oil-sheiks extort their pound of flesh, the Superpowers sit helplessly on their piles of atom bombs, and Americans keep taking pot shots at prominent citizens. In the offing is the specter of world starvation, of...”

“...After all these years since his days in Chefoo this incident occurred. Greta called me and I was dumb-founded. Last summer I spent a few days with Greta and her husband and two children. In Mamaroneck I spent a little time with my son, John, and his wife and 2 children. My son Rickey here in Lake Jackson drove me up to spend some time with them ... a lovely experience seeing that part of the country between here and there, and better still seeing children and grandchildren again. Texas is too far to go north often, but am getting my feet on the ground again ... I was treated royally. .. We all go in different directions, but those years in Chefoo will never be forgotten - they were a good foundation for life.. I hope my father’s manuscript of the beginnings of the Schools in Chefoo, which I had Xeroxed and of which JOE DUNLAP has a copy, can be included in the Centennial book on Chefoo (being compiled by Mrs. John (Sheila) Miller who is now at Chefoo School, Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands...”

“...Toronto to meet DAVID MICHELL who was at Chefoo the same time I was (he says he remembers me - amazing! I should have asked him what he remembered). It was good too to see the Rowes, dear friends of my parents in China days. Earlier this summer we enjoyed a short visit with MOLLY (SPRINGER) JOHNSON and family who are on furlough from the Philippines (Far Eastern Gospel Crusade) . From 1943 to the end of the War I had a job on the Conducting Staff, escorting R.C.A.F. personnel by ship across the Atlantic and bringing back German prisoners of war - an exciting, interesting and sometimes dangerous job. In that period I saw a lot of England and Scotland and experienced some of the worst bombing of London, while wafting for orders to catch a return ship across the ocean. When World War II ended I left the brokerage business and landed a job in the Department of Veteran Affairs, starting half-way up the ladder as Principal Clerk, due to my Chefoo ’classical’ education plus my business experience and the courses I’d taken.
